Funded ProjectsWilderness Based Orientation at Western State

August 4, 2011

The purpose of Wilderness Based Orientation (WBO) is to provide incoming students the opportunity to make meaningful connections with other new students and get to know the incredible recreational opportunities that Gunnison has to offer before they begin their first semester at college. WBO courses are led by “seasoned” students who give instruction on adventure activities and life in college.

rafting-buddies“Welcome to paradise, guys” was Chris’ sincere greeting. To honor his adventurous spirit and passion for sharing the beauty of the Gunnison area, the Foundation has chosen to support the WBO program.“We are very excited and honored to be receiving such generous gifts from The Chris Mikesell Foundation. These grants will provide opportunities for students that would otherwise not have the means to participate in programming such as this. Their generosity will positively impact the lives of many Western State students,” said Janna Hansen, director of Wilderness Pursuits at Western State.

The Chris Mikesell Foundation awarded multiple grants to the College for the Wilderness Based Orientation program totalling $12,000 from 2009 to 2011.
