Funded ProjectsImproving safety in the Colorado backcountry

November 10, 2017

The unique and diverse snow climate of the Elk Mountains paired with the remoteness of Crested Butte, Colo., has presented challenges and limitations for state-wide forecasting operations. The Crested Butte Avalanche Center, founded in 2002, has made huge improvements to meet the needs of the public as they seek adventure on the mountains.

CBAC provides daily avalanche advisories, public outreach and education events with the sole purpose of preventing loss of life, limb and property to natural and triggered occurrence of avalanches in the backcountry surrounding Crested Butte.

Chris loved the time he spent in Crested Butte, and he was a passionate skier. In his honor, the Chris Mikesell Foundation gave a grant of $500 in 2017 to help provide accurate and useful weather, snowpack and avalanche information to help keep people safe on the slopes.
