Funded Projects2022 Funded Project: Camp Horizon
Finding a Connection With Nature
In ministry since 1947, Camp Horizon is a member of the United Methodist Great Plains Camping Inc., which is comprised of five United Methodist camps across Kansas and Nebraska. The primary purpose of Camp Horizon has been providing a summer camp program for children and youth ranging from first grade to 12th grade. Throughout the rest of the year, the organization hosts groups of all shapes and sizes to provide people a chance to get away from the noise and distractions of daily life. It has become a place to find a connection with nature, God, and others, and many youth benefit from improved mental health after attending camp.
Forging Personal Relationships
In honor of Chris’ love for the outdoors and people, the Chris Mikesell Foundation assists organizations like Camp Horizon that create opportunities for young people to experience nature. The Mikesell family also has had a personal tie to Camp Horizon for many years—their now-grown children attended Camp Horizon during their youth, and various children from their church continue to attend Camp Horizon each year. Therefore, the Chris Mikesell Foundation provided a $1,000 grant to Camp Horizon in 2022. The funds donated will help renovate the organization’s 25-year-old challenge course over the next year.
