Since 1947, Camp Horizon has served as a hallmark of fellowship in the local community. The organization remains a member of the United Methodist Great Plains Camping Inc., a group of Christian camps located across Kansas and Nebraska. With a mission of creating a safe space where young people can embrace the presence of God in real and meaningful ways, Camp Horizon offers a summer camp program for all ages ranging from first to 12th grade. In addition to summer camp, the organization hosts groups of all shapes and sizes throughout the year, offering an opportunity for individuals to connect with nature, God, and others.
In honor of Chris’ love for the outdoors and people, the Chris Mikesell Foundation assists organizations like Camp Horizon that create opportunities for young people to experience nature. The Mikesell family also has had a personal tie to Camp Horizon for many years—their now-grown children attended Camp Horizon during their youth, and various children from their church continue to attend Camp Horizon each year. To help support their continued mission of expanding fellowship across the state, the Chris Mikesell Foundation provided a $2,500 grant to Camp Horizon in 2023. The funds donated will help purchase the equipment necessary to renovate the organization’s 25-year-old challenge course, a camp staple that helps to strengthen trust, teamwork, and communication skills.
